The Verrow Eternity

The eternity band is the one piece on this list that has to work alongside something else, and almost every problem with it comes from ignoring that. A band that stands proud of the ring it sits against will rock, catch, and wear a groove into its neighbour within a couple of years. Height is the whole design.

The Verrow is channel set, which means the stones sit between two continuous walls of metal rather than under individual claws. The walls are then burnished over the stones’ edges, so the finished surface is almost flat and there is nothing standing above the girdle line to snag on clothing or on the ring beside it. Channel setting is slower than claw setting and much slower than the pavé work it is often confused with, because each seat has to be cut to its own stone and the wall thickness has to stay even along the entire circumference or the eye will catch the variation immediately.

A full eternity band cannot be resized. This is a genuine limitation and we would rather say it here than in an email six months later. If you expect your hand to change — and most hands do, across a life — we will often suggest a three-quarter version instead, which looks identical from above, sits more comfortably, and can be adjusted at the back forever.

We set these in matched stones rather than assembled ones, because a channel is unforgiving: a stone half a tenth off will read as a gap. This is the one place in the workshop where we do not use old cuts.

What changes per commission: the number and therefore the size of the stones, whether the band runs full or three-quarter, and the profile of the walls — square-edged for a crisper line, or softly rounded so it disappears against the finger.
