The Sennen Drop

A drop earring is a moving object, and the difference between a good pair and an expensive pair is almost entirely in the joints. The Sennen articulates twice — once just below the ear, once at the midpoint — so the lower section swings independently of the upper one. Worn, this reads as liveliness; the stones catch light constantly rather than only when the wearer turns. Rigid drops of the same length hang dead.

Weight distribution is the other half of it. Long earrings fail because the mass sits at the bottom, which drags the post forward and makes the wearer take them off after two hours. We build the Sennen top-heavy on purpose: the largest stone sits closest to the ear, the lower elements are cut lighter and hollowed where nobody sees, and the post is fitted with a friction back sized to the actual weight rather than a stock one.

They are made as a genuine pair rather than two identical earrings. Ears are not symmetrical and neither are hand-cut stones, so we set the better-matched pair of stones at the top where they sit side by side and can be compared, and allow more variation lower down where they never appear in the same field of view.

What changes per commission: the length, first of all — this is a shape that changes character completely between thirty and sixty millimetres. Then the number of articulations, the stones, and whether the drop finishes in a stone or in a plain polished element, which is quieter and which we find ourselves recommending more often than clients expect.

They are also the piece we most often make from metal a client already owns. A pair of drops swallows a surprising amount of gold, and an inherited chain nobody wears is very often exactly enough.
