The Corven Signet

A signet is a tool that stopped being used and became jewellery, and the good ones still feel like tools. Weight is most of it. A signet cut from solid metal — not a hollow-backed casting with a thin face — sits on the finger with an authority that nothing else in this list has, and it develops a surface over ten years that no finishing process can fake.

The Corven is machined and then forged from a solid billet, so the face and the shank are continuous. There is no join at the shoulders, which is where hollow signets almost always crack. The face is left generously thick — deliberately deeper than it needs to be — because engraving removes metal, and a face that starts thin has nothing left to give when it is re-cut in twenty years.

Engraving is done by hand with a graver, not by machine. The difference is visible even to someone who does not know what they are looking at: a hand-cut letter has a bright, faceted floor that catches light, while a machine-cut one has a uniform matte channel. Hand cutting is also reversible in a way machining is not; a hand-engraved face can be lightly polished back and re-cut without losing its shape.

We cut crests, monograms, single letters, dates, and increasingly things that are not heraldic at all — a plant, a building, a line of handwriting taken from a letter. Reverse engraving, so the ring can actually seal wax, is available and is genuinely lovely, though almost nobody uses it twice.

What changes per commission: the shape of the face (oval, cushion or the flatter octagonal cut), the depth of the shank, and whether the face is engraved, left blank as a mirror, or flush-set with a single stone. A blank face is not a lesser option — it is what we would choose ourselves, and it can be cut at any point in the ring’s life, including by someone other than us.
